Lladro Retired Pieces

Their are few collectibles that are as sought after as the porcelain figurines produced by Lladro. It is not unusual for Lladro retired pieces to bring thousands of dollars through an auction house or online at Ebay and it seems as though the popularity of the porcelain figurine from Spain is increasing rapidly. The slight variations in the finish is what makes the Lladro line so collectible but it is also the part that makes it so confusing to a new collector. The slight variations of the finish often leads to confusion in new collectors and the possibility of over paying for a piece that is actually still in production.

Over time, the Lladro production process has seen changes in the final firing process which produces the sought after soft colors that Lladro is so famous for. The firing process and final finish of the Lladro pieces is what confuses Lladro collectors most frequently. The three available finishes are gres, matte and gloss and while a particular figurine mold may still be in production, a finish may no longer be available. The same figurine mold is frequently produced in more than one finish over the span of it’s production. Novice Lladro collectors are frequently confused, thinking that the figurine itself is retired when it was simply the finish that is no longer being used on that particular mold.

If you are considering collecting Lladro retired pieces and still consider yourself a novice in the identification of these highly sought after pieces, it is important to become knowledgeable about what particular finishes are retired in each mold as well as the logo that marks each piece of authentic Lladro. Becoming familiar with each finish can be a difficult task for a novice but the good news is that their are several great books out on the market that will quickly give your knowledge base a jump start. It is important to know what it is that you are purchasing in order to avoid over paying for a Lladro piece that is still in production versus one that is actually retired.
